Community Involvement
CM. 1:
Assess the oral health needs and services of the community to determine action plans and availability of resources to meet the health care needs.
CM. 3:
Provide community oral health services in a variety of settings.
CM. 7:
Advocate for effective oral health care for underserved populations.
In Fall 2018, we began completing community outreach services including oral health screenings, fluoride varnish applications, sealant programs, and visiting nursing homes and assisted living homes. These rotations taught me the importance of not only providing oral hygiene and patient education in the clinical setting, but also in the community. One event in particular that I thoroughly enjoyed was volunteering for Give Kids a Smile, we treated children in under served communities that do not have access to dental care.

Along with the above community services we provided, myself and two other students came up with a lesson plan and presentation to present to a group of middle school aged students regarding how smoking affects oral health. Below is the lesson plan and presentation.
